What is Viagra?

Sildenafil, the original medication for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) in men, was introduced by Pfizer in 1996. It marked the FDA’s first approval for ED treatment and has since remained among the most widely used medications, with Cialis as its major competitor. ED affects millions of men in Canada, with over 3 million men aged 40 and above estimated to suffer from it. Viagra acts swiftly by relaxing smooth muscles, enhancing blood flow to the penis, and thereby facilitating and sustaining an erection. Improved blood circulation results in a stronger erection and enhanced ability to maintain it.

Belonging to the class of PED5 inhibitors, Viagra doesn’t trigger an erection on its own; sexual stimulation is necessary to achieve it. These inhibitors do not impact libido, requiring genuine sexual arousal to attain an erection. Viagra is effective in maintaining erections where insufficient blood flow is the primary cause. However, if the root cause lies in a hormonal imbalance, Viagra might not address the ED issue, warranting alternative treatments.

Viagra and Cialis differ notably in their active life within the body. Viagra’s effects last roughly 4-6 hours and act more rapidly compared to Cialis. Given its approximate 6-hour duration, additional doses might be necessary depending on individual needs. It’s advised to take Viagra approximately 30 minutes before engaging in sexual activity.

IMPORTANT: Viagra does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases (e.g., HIV, hepatitis B, gonorrhea, syphilis, etc.). It’s advisable to use alternative protection methods such as latex condoms to prevent pregnancy and STD transmission.

What is the recommended dosage?
